We all know that exercise is important for our health, but exercise can also be problematic for those with certain health conditions. One condition that many worry about is diabetes. However, exercise can be very beneficial for this type of disease. That doesn't mean you can go out and do whatever exercise you want though. You do have to be careful when it comes to diabetes. Here are just a few things you should know about exercise and diabetes.

Benefits

There are a number of benefits of exercise for diabetes. First of all, exercise can help reduce weight, which is very beneficial for controlling diabetes. Another major benefit of exercise is that it reduces the chances of heart disease. You will also see a reduction in blood sugar levels. Last, but not least, you will see an improvement in your overall health.

Best Exercises to Do

Aerobic exercises are the most recommended type of exercise for those with diabetes. One of the most popular options is walking. Walking is low-impact, but when done properly can get your heart rate where it needs to be to adequately burn calories. Other options include dancing and biking. However, those with neuropathy problems in their feet, should avoid any exercise that puts too much strain on their feet. In this case, you may want to opt for swimming, chair exercises, or any other exercise that takes the weight off your feet.

Risks

There are risks when it comes to exercising with diabetes. First of all, blood sugar levels can drop during a workout, which can cause you to feel lightheaded or shaky. To help prevent this, you should check your blood sugar ahead of time to make sure your levels are at a good number. Another risk is damage to the feet, which can take weeks to heal. You must wear proper footwear that is comfortable, prevents blisters, and offers good support.

Things to Keep In Mind

You must speak with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine. You must also stay hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of water per day. When exercising, you will want to keep water on hand and drink enough during your routine to prevent dehydration. Another important thing to keep in mind is that if you start to feel shaky or lightheaded during your workout, you need to check your blood sugar levels and have a snack to bring your blood sugar levels back up. Remember to always check your levels before and after a workout. Last, but not least, always check your feet for any sores or blisters after your routine.

Exercise can be very beneficial to those with diabetes. However, you must remember to take proper precautions to prevent the risks involved.
