Monitoring Glucose Levels

Why monitoring glucose levels regularly is important.

Diabetes is a devastating disease that affects millions. This disease can range from mild to severe, depending upon the individual and their genetics as well as their dietary habits. Those that suffer from diabetes must consistently be monitoring glucose levels daily, often those with Type 2 diabetes only have to check it once a day. People that have Type 1 diabetes have to monitor their levels anywhere from three to ten times a day according to their personal needs, some with Type 2 have to do it more than once daily; it depends upon the individual and the doctor’s orders. Monitoring glucose levels as prescribed is crucial to the diabetic patient. Failure to keep close records of these levels greatly increases other health complications and can even cause death in some. Without glucose records, the right amount of insulin may not be administered and thereby causing a great host of other problems.

Monitoring glucose levels has become easier on diabetic patients than ever before. The older glucose testers are nearly inhumane compared to the modern versions. Older versions require the user to have to retake the test often due to inaccuracy and requiring another prick in the finger. Monitors now require very little blood, making the finger prick smaller and less painful due to needing the least amount of blood. Some of the newer glucose monitors allow the diabetic to use blood from areas other than the finger. Having to test up to ten times a day can make a finger very sore, these newer testers make the whole procedure less painful as well as more convenient for the individual. Newer glucose monitors often have discs that hold more than one test strip on them, making them easier to load instead of using the tiny strips, just one of the discs or cartridges can be used multiple times. This type of system is much easier for those with arthritis and vision problems.

Testing kits are steadily advancing as the years go by; these advancements have encouraged diabetics to test as they are prescribed to do. A person having to test up to ten times can tend to prolong a few tests due to pain caused from testing, these newer convenient testing kits have caused the procedure to be nearly pain free and more tolerable than testers of the past. Many of the newer model glucose testers have U.S.B cords that hook them directly to a computer that helps the diabetic keep better track of their glucose levels, which in turn allows the doctor to prescribe the appropriate doses of insulin. Often glucose levels can be lowered by eating and exercising, when the levels are closely monitored and recorded it enables doctors to encourage exercise and appropriate foods to adjust glucose levels. When lower levels of glucose are detected one can lower their levels naturally, instead of taking another insulin injection.

Diabetics find that having this disease is hard enough with all of the restrictions placed on them as a result, but by having less painful testing methods makes the whole ordeal easier to cope with. Monitoring glucose levels can be annoying, however doing so keeps diabetics healthier and improves their quality of life drastically. Glucose monitors and test strips can be expensive, which is one reason we offer free glucose monitors to diabetics. We strive to provide the highest quality monitors and supplies to diabetics along with lifesaving information on this disease. While we cannot take it away, we can make it more pleasant to control and monitor diabetes than ever before.
